For your information, we provide a set of web links to organizations that may help you in your relationship with your dog or cat.   We selected these links because they are generally consistent with the No-Kill ethic.   We must offer the disclaimer, however, that we do not support everything on these web sites.

Best Friends, the most well-known No-Kill sanctuary in America, has an excellent document that can answer your questions about caring for a dog.

Best Friends also has an extensive library of pet care information online.  Examples include:
  • Help Me, I Found a Stray
  • Behavior Helplines
  • Kids and Pets
  • Finding a New Home for Your Pet
  • Alley Cat Allies is widely recognized as the national clearinghouse for information about feral cats.

The library includes podcasts and audio features on a wide range of animal health issues such as heartworm, allergies suffered by  pets, traveling with pets, arthritis in younger, as well as older, dogs and cats, etc.

This article by a vet at a Kansas City animal hospital examines problems such as aggression, anxiety and house-soiling that may occur in geriatric dogs and offers some advice on treatment of pain and other conditions that may be causing these problems.  This helpful article from an unexpected source deserves consideration by anyone with an older dog.  It can provide a basis for discussions with your vet on how to help your dog.

The Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine
This website has some helpful information for pet caretakers about medical care for dogs and cats, including videos. There is a good deal more information on cats than dogs Examples:
    • Pet Owner's Guide to Cancer - dogs and cats
    • Giving Your Cat Liquid Medicine
    • Caring for Your Diabetic Cat
    • Cat Owner's Guide to Kidney Disease
Refusing to use the litter box and spraying are often mentioned by people who want to give up a cat.  The Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine offers some common-sense advice.
Cats International, a non-profit dedicated to helping people understand their cats provides important information about problems caused by the declawing cats, which is essentially amputation of part of the cat's foot and causes life-long suffering for the cat and problems for caretakers.

    Feline Leukemia

Check this Best Friends link for a heart-warming story about cats with feline leukemia.

    YOUR  PET'S  TEN  COMMANDMENTS
    Anonymous

    1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years.  Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

    2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

    3. Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being.

    4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

    5. Talk to me even if I don’t understand your words -- I do understand the tone in your voice when you are speaking to me.

    6. Know that whatever happens, I love you unconditionally.

    7. Remember that I am an animal and may try to defend myself if I am afraid.

    8. Before you scold me, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I’m not getting the right food,  so my stomach hurts.  Or  I am in pain from arthritis, toothache, or other medical problems.  I depend on you to take me to the vet to see what's wrong.

    9. Please give me special help as I grow old. You too, will grow old.

    10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can’t bear to watch. Don’t make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.
