Emergency Medical Care

Safe Haven always provides whatever medical care is needed by each dog and cat in our care, as long as it is in the best interest of the animal.  When we are neutering stray and barn cats, we sometimes find that the cats need treatment for diseases or injuries.   The dogs who we pull from Kent County SPCA in our Life Preserver Dog Program are in some cases injured or sick with diseases, which would result in them being put down if we did not rescue them.

The stories of Pandora the cat and Hope the Lab illustrate the kind of care that Safe Haven provides to our animals.

Dogs
Hope was a stray who had been hit by a car and was taken to Kent County SPCA.  The vet at KCSPCA determined that Hope had a broken pelvis that would heal with bed rest.  Safe Haven pulled Hope from the SPCA so he could recover in a foster home.   We found that Hope was suffering more than we expected so we took him to a vet specializing in these kinds of injuries.  Hope's break was too complicated to resolve itself with bed rest and surgery was required.  The surgery was a success and Hope is now able to walk.

Fay, a Shepherd mix, had mange that was so bad that almost all of her fur was gone and she was covered with scabs.  Mange is a skin condition caused by tiny mites.  Safe Haven pulled Faye from Kent County SPCA so she would not be put down.   We took Fay for a special dips that killed the mange and relieved her suffering.  Fay's fur has now grown back and she is beautiful!

Cats
Pandora's illness was as mysterious as her name.   Pandora belongs to a feral cat colony that was abandoned by the person who had been feeding them when she moved and left them behind.  Safe Haven has since been feeding the cats and has had them neutered. Pandora was found during the last snowstorm unable to walk and dragging herself with her front paws.

Assuming an injury with broken bones, we immediately took her to a Veterinarian for X-Rays.  It turned out she had no visible injuries, but she was developing life-threatening breathing problems, so she was referred to the Neurology Department of a specialty veterinary practice.  A CAT Scan revealed that she had a massive tumor pressing on her spine impeding her ability to walk and breath normally.  As any true No-Kill organization would do, Safe Haven decided to go ahead with the lifesaving and expensive special surgery.

The surgery was a success and, thankfully for Pandora, the tumor turned out to be infection-based and benign.  On the 4th day after surgery Pandora stood up and on the 5th day she was walking again.
