Safe Haven collects pet food to people in need, with our highest priority being people who are feeding stray cats.  We have partnered with the two Meals on Wheels organizations in Sussex County - Long Neck and Belltown/Lewes - to send out fliers telling people in need that they can get free pet food, as well as Trap-Neuter-Return of stray cats from Safe Haven.

Stray Cats  It is our experience that people of very modest means are often the ones who do the most for stray cats.  Our highest priority is to get free cat food to these wonderful caretakers of the stray cats.  Safe Haven not only helps feral/farm cat caretakers with Spay/Neuter assistance, we also donate food to them, as they feed colonies of 8-40+ cats.

Families and Pets In this recession, many families are really struggling and might feel that they can no longer afford to keep their pet(s).  If the pets are loved and well cared for, it is best for the people and pets to stay together, so we give free pet food to these families in need.

Thank you to Food Lion and to the Milford Walmart for donating pet food to our Pet Food Pantry!

You Can Help

1. Buy Pet Food
We especially need cat food because of all the thousands of stray cats in the area. Because stray cats live hard lives, we need good food to strengthen their immune systems.  These brands are not more expensive, just healthier, and they are available at regular regular grocery stores:
  • Food Lion Adult Cat Food (Blue Bag
  • Purina Naturals
  • Wholesome Goodness
  • Friskies Urinary Track Formula
  • Good Life
  • Maintenance by Diamond (carried by Concord Pet)

2. Donate to the Pet Food Pantry

You can designate that your donation is for the Pet Food Pantry by writing that on your check memo or by paypal.

3. Help Spread the Word

Download the flier below entitled "Do You Need Pet Food?" and put copies where people in need might see them.

4. Ask Your Grocery Store for Ripped Bags

Often pet food bags get ripped in transit and grocery stores throw the food away.  Ask your grocery store if you can take the ripped bags for people in need.  We will be happy to acknowledge the store's help on our web site if they would like that.
