Terry Wilkerson, Dedicated Volunteer

Terry Wilkerson and Kira

We are so grateful to Terry Wilkerson for all of his contributions to Safe Haven over the years. He is the Chairman of Safe Haven's Advisory Committee, which is composed of our most active volunteers, Board members, and Executive Director Anne Gryczon, and which meets monthly. Terry also represents the Advisory Committee at the meetings of the Safe Haven Board of Directors.

Terry started by helping Safe Haven with our donation canisters placed at local businesses and also by finding items to be auctioned at our fundraisers. Whenever there is a Safe Haven fundraising project, Terry dedicates his time and talents to make it a success. We can always count on Terry to sell the most tickets to our major annual fundraiser, Cause 4 Paws silent auction. He also sold an incredible number of raffle tickets for the Mercedes Benz in 2007.

Terry is willing to take on any task. He finds donors of merchandise and services for our annual silent auction, Cause 4 Paws. He took multiple shifts at our Gift Wrapping fundraiser at the Tanger Mall outlets. He even directed traffic at our Tails on Trail 5k/1mile run. Terry sponsored two dogs in our Life Preserver Dog Transport Program - Simon and Tazz, two terrier brothers who will be going to a Vermont No-Kill shelter. Terry is also one of our local transport volunteers who drive our life Preserver dogs from one place to another, including boarding kennels, foster homes, and vet offices.

Safe Haven is so grateful to Terry for his 2011 donation of $20,000, which gives him the opportunity to name a part of the building. Terry has chosen the Volunteer Meeting Room, which is a very important place because of how much we rely on our volunteers.

Terry retired at the age of 42 as a court stenographer in Maryland. His father took an early retirement, also, and together they cared for Terry's mother for 20 years after her stroke, because of her preference for only family members as caregivers.

Terry has lived in Delaware for 15 years and been enjoying the beaches here for over 30 years. He began by volunteering at the Rehoboth Film Society. He also took his dog, Kira, to the Harbor Health Care facility in Lewes for pet therapy, enjoying the huge smiles that Kira always brought to the residents' faces. He is an usher for the Theater of the Arts.  Terry is also involved in the New Life Food Basket, operated by the Lewes Rehoboth Area Association of Churches. He serves as Chairman of the Fundraising Team for his church, which is about to construct a building, and he volunteers as a care giver, an acolyte and whatever other tasks that need doing.

“Who said you have plenty of 'free time' when you are retired?" Terry asks. “I cannot say that. I have found out that working with my church and with various charities makes life truly worthwhile! Bless you all and please help the Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary whenever you can.”

Terry is one of Safe Haven's most treasured volunteers.
